The Author
The Merging
Evelyn King Mumaw, fourth of the nine
children of Irvin J. and Cora E. (Shank) King, was born
in Royersford, Pennsylvania in 1919. In 1946 she moved to
Harrisonburg, Virginia, to attend Eastern Mennonite
College (EMC; now Eastern Mennonite University). There
she earned a B.R.E. Her later studies included a semester
in the graduate school at Wheaton College and earning an
M.A. Ed. degree from Madison College (now James Madison
University) in Harrisonburg.
From 1951-1965 and 1968-1970, Evelyn
served as Dean of Women at EMC. In June 1965 she was
married to John R. Mumaw, churchman and retiring
president of EMC. As a team they served the church
through conferences, seminars, camp retreats, and
overseas assignments.
Evelyn herself was also privileged to
serve in a variety of roles. These included being leader
of womens retreats, member of Choice Books Title
Selection Committee, member of Board of Directors of
Pleasant View Homes, President of Virginia District
Womens Mennonite Service Committee, President of
Virginia Retirement Community Auxiliary, and more.
In her home congregation, Dayton
Mennonite Church in Virginia, she has served in such
roles as Sunday school teacher, church council member,
pastoral search committee member, cosponsor of senior
activities, and delegate to the Virginia Mennonite
Conference.
Evelyn has traveled in many Asian,
African, European, and Caribbean countries as well as in
most of the United States and the Canadian provinces.
At age eighty, following major heart
surgery, she is living in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She
retains a keen interest in the life and work of the
church and things genealogical. Her time is filled with
such activities as reading, Bible study, writing, bird
watching, plant growing, visiting, remaining in touch
with family, and community work.
