Daniel Liechty was raised in Berne, Indiana and is a graduate of Eastern Mennonite High School, of Eastern Mennonite College, and of Mennonite Biblical Seminary. After spending three years on assignment in Europe with the Mennonite Central Committee, Liechty completed doctoral studies at the University of Vienna in Austria. His research focused on Sabbatarian ideology among Anabaptists and Unitarians in East Central Europe. Upon returning to the United States, Liechty became interested in mental health issues and completed graduate degrees in clinical social work and pastoral counseling. He served several years at the Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, where he specialized in group work. During this time he developed an increasing interest in issues of grief, death and dying, and subsequently moved into a clinical social work practice at the Montgomery (Pa.) Medical Center Hospice Program, where he also served as a member of the hospital ethics committee. In 1999, he joined the Graduate Faculty of Illinois State University (Normal, Ill.) in the School of Social Work. Liechty has published many books, chapters, and articles related to history, religion and mental health, and clinical social work practice. A member of Germantown Mennonite Church in Philadelphia, he attends services at Mennonite Church of Normal as well as at Moses Montefiore Synagogue of Normal. He is married to Naomi Wilansky, a clinical social worker, and they have a young daughter, Hannah Miriam. A lover of roots music, Liechty has performed in acoustic bluegrass, country, and blues groups. He now performs with the Reunion Vocal Band (folk/country) and Bloomsday (Celtic), is a musician for The Dances of Universal Peace, and takes part in an emerging Yiddish/Klezmer singing ensemble in Normal.
