Peace and
Justice Shall Embrace
"Millard Lind richly deserves the
honor of this book. While its authors work in a variety
of disciplines, they have produced a book focused
appropriately on the political character of the Bible and
of its witness. No other Old Testament scholar has
stressed so persistently and so compellingly the peculiar
politics of the biblical texts and, hence, of the church.
These scholarly essays, by some of Millard Linds
former students at the Associated Mennonite Biblical
Seminary, honor his legacy and will, I trust, publish it
more widely. Expanding on his work in creative ways, in
their own distinctive voices, they also testify to his
extraordinary qualities as a teacher. On all counts, it
is a book worth reading and studying."
Ben C. Ollenburger, Professor of Biblical Theology,
Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary
"This highly readable collection of
articles is a fitting tribute to Millard Lind. Millard
was focused and intense in the classroom. He had an
integrity and a passion that I much admireda
passion for justice, for peace, and for the text. May his
tribe increase. These essays contain a wealth of insight
emanating from an Anabaptist theological stance and
careful scholarship. I highly recommend this collection
for personal study and use in courses in peace and
justice in colleges and seminaries."
Wilma Ann Bailey, Associate Professor of Biblical
Studies and Religion, Messiah Collegeinary
"Millard Lind was one of my the
first doctoral candidates. I have always regarded him
with great admiration and respect. Persistence and
commitment have characterized his whole career and life.
I am delighted to salute this fine, remarkable
person."
David Noel Freedman, University of California, San
Diego
"Lind passionately taught that the
Old Testament was a book of peace and justice. In this
volume several of his students reflect, develop, and
expand upon this combination."
Gerald Gerbrandt, President, Canadian Mennonite Bible
College
"A splendid collection of essays in
honor of a great scholar-teacher, whose deep influence on
the life and thought of his stu-dents is reflected, to
his honor, in their passionate, mor-ally acute
interpretations of the biblical text."
Patrick D. Miller, Charles T. Haley Professor of Old
Testament Theology, Princeton Theological Seminary
"The best of Millard Linds students tackle one
of the toughest problems of the church: How can justice
and peace kiss each other? A fitting tribute to a scholar
and churchman who has led us all in this search."
