To Continue the
Dialogue
C. Norman Kraus was born in Denbigh (Newport News),
Virginia, February 20, 1924, to Clyde and Phoebe (Shenk)
Kraus. He was baptized into the Mennonite Church at age
nine by Bishop George R. Brunk. He attended Eastern
Mennonite School (high school and college) Goshen
College, and Goshen Biblical Seminary. Later he studied
at Princeton Theological Seminary (1953-1954) and Duke
University (1958-1961) where he received his Ph. D. in
Religion.
He taught social
science and history in high school at Eastern Mennonite
School (1946-1949); and Bible and religion at Goshen
College (1951-1980). He also lectured at the Associated
Mennonite Biblical Seminary and taught at Serampore
Theological College (India), Union Biblical Seminary
(India), and Baptist Theological College of Western
Australia. He was ordained to the ministry and served a
congregation in Topeka, Indiana (1950-1953).
Interspersed with
faculty assignment at Goshen College, he served with
Mennonite Central Committee and Mennonite Board of
Missions in various board and overseas teaching
assignments. From 1980-1987 he served with the Mennonite
Board of Missions in Japan, also lecturing and teaching
in various other Asian countries.
Kraus is author of
numerous articles and books, including The Community
of the Spirit (Eerdmans, 1976, Herald Press rev.
1993), The Authentic Witness (Eerdmans, 1979), Evangelicalism
and Anabaptism (editor and author, Herald, 1979), Missions,
Evangelism and Church Growth (ed. and author, Herald
1980), Jesus Christ Our Lord (Herald, 1987, 1990),
God Our Savior (Herald, 1991), An Intrusive
Gospel: Christian Mission in the Postmodern World
(InterVarsity, 1998), and more.
In 1988 he retired to
Harrisonburg, Virginia, where he now lives with his wife
Rhoda. He remains busy writing and teaching, having made
several trips to Japan, China, and India to lecture.
