You Never GaVe Me a Name
One Mennonite Woman's Story

Katie Funk Wiebe, Wichita, Kansas, prolific author and still on the speaking circuit in her eighties, continues to examine her life, moving into aspects not mentioned in previous writings.

Was her name Katarina or Katie? Or a variation? You Never Gave Me a Name is a refreshing retrospective look at Katie’s search for identity. For new generations it holds potential to bring the power of a woman’s perspective to faith issues, especially related to women’s roles, and to be useful for group discussion or personal resource and inspiration.

Katie begins her story with attending a conservative Bible college in Canada and early married life and motherhood. Although she had been intent on being the best full-time stay-at-home “mom” possible, early widowhood pushed her into the workforce to earn a livelihood for her family of four. This, in turn, led to a professional teaching career. With each new stage in the journey, she found her name changed. What was her real name? She concludes, “Our names, being the gift of others, aren’t really ours until we make them our own.”
